  • Answer:

Heat molding can help break them in faster if your skates are heat moldable. Whatever you do, do not wear your skates around your house or do deep knee bends. There are also people who say to wet your socks and stuff but ignore them, this will ruin your skates. Wearing them around your house only breaks them in for walking, not skating. You will get creases in all the wrong places. Doing deep knee bends will break them down, not break them in. Only do deep knee bends after they are broken in. The only way to break your skates in is by skating. Do things like stroking, crossovers, 3-turns, mohawks, edges, etc. Simple things, but don't do deep knee bends. Only lace the two bottom hooks for the first five hours of use or so. Only lace the three bottom hooks for the next five hours of use after that. After your skates are broken in, then you can lace them all the way up if you please. Only skate in them for short periods of time or your feet will be killing you. Bunga pads can help reduce irritation. You can get any stubborn spots punched out. Some people will actually recommend doing deep knee bends and wearing them around the house but they are wrong. I am not just making this up, this is what is recommended and stated by the skate manufacturers themselves. THe best thing to do is skate in them. If you have to you can wear them around the house, but try to avoid walking in them, the motion is really different from a skating motion so they might break in wrong. The extra padding on the ankle may make it seem to take longer to break in but then later you will have more support when you are skating. When you do skate in them really concentrate on proper technique, so try to keep your ankles up right.

Do NOT get those skates soaked. That padding and foam can NOT get wet. Don't listen to her. Where did she get this garbage? Sit in warm water with skates? What's she thinking? The best way is to just skate in them. :)

As painful as it's gonna sound, just skate in them as much as you can. Try to change back to your old skates rarely. Also, getting your skates heat molded may also help.

Im not sure. The best option is buying plastic blade guards. Use your skates @your house -obviously- wearing this guards. Walk around (dont use the stairs) and bend your knees. This will help you.

Most people think I'm kidding when I tell them this, but it really works. Put vodka (or another 40% or higher liquor) inside your boots. About four ounces per boot will do. Do this at the rink and immediately put your skates on and skate with them. It will take about an hour for your boots to dry off (except for the toes, but that's ok.) On the first day your skates will immediately be more fitted to your foot. Since you said you are a beginner, your skates should only take one time of this in order to be broken in. When you are at a higher level and your boots are tougher, you can do this twice for the best results. Don't worry, this will not ruin your boots. The reason this works is that alcohol will mellow out the leather on the inside of your boot, allowing it to conform to your feet.
