Tips on learning an Aerial jump by myself?

Figure skating lutz jump?

  • um, i just landed my flip jump, and am now learning a lutz. I'm having extreme difficulty staying on my outside edge resulting into a "flutz" ): if you have any tips to ...show more

  • Answer:

It took me forever to get that lutz, but I have never flutzed it in my life. The reason for this is that when I was learning it, I would get on my outside edge, STOP, then toe pick and jump. I got zero rotation or height, but I trained myself to stay on that outside edge. It took a while, but eventually I could do it without stopping at all and now I have a really nice Lutz. By the way you're describing it, I'm going to guess you're a regular rotator (I rotate an unusual way). So, yes, your right foot needs to be behind your left foot. Try to put it a little past (but still behind) your left foot. It'll help you stay on your outside edge. For your loop (my favourite jump!), make sure you really pull your arms in and around to help with your rotation, and bend your knees to get the lift and height you need. You can download all that music from youtube with listentoyoutube.com or video2mp3.com, and your coach can find someone to cut it for you.

The lutz is tough but make sure your arms are checked in the correct position because that helps to maintain the right edge. Also maybe do some footwork before the jump to help you get on the outside edge and stay on it. You right foot can tap either to the right or behind it doesn't matter but it works for me for it to be right in between :) For the loop jump going to a backwards outside edge THEN going to the backwards inside helps and when you check your arms look behind you then when in the position look forwards and keeping your head straight shoulders checked bring your left knee up and when you land make sure your arms and shoulders are checked and get your right leg out immediately. Hope I helped :)

I'm landing all my doubles except double axel, and my lutz is still a flutz most of the time! It just takes time and lots of practice to fix it. However, luckily, my flutz problem didn't transfer over when I learned a double lutz, oddly.

For your edge jumps, the best tip I can give you, without seeing you skate, is to bend your knees, that's where you get the pressure accumulated from to take off. I like John Tesh instrumental songs, just search for them on YouTube. They're perfect, as they're slow at parts and fast at others.
