I was about 20 years old when I started skating...you should go for it if you enjoy it. I started out doing 2 rounds of group lessons, found a coach I liked when I did well at groups. Skating is a somewhat expensive sport if you choose to really get into it, but there are ways to manage that. You won't stay with it if you don't love it...and if you do it will really enrich your life. My best advice is try hard, enjoy what you're doing, and stay out of rink drama. There is drama between coaches/skaters/all of the above at every rink. People will try to pull you in, talk about others...don't fall for it. Enjoy!

I started when I was 14, this January. I am 15 now but I am almost done with basics, I am at Gamma now. I am in an adult class which is great because I am not with kids and get to work at my own pace, not to mention my instructor is awesome as well as my classmates. It wasn't hard for me when I first started, with the exception of stopping. I went skating about 6 times before I started lessons and never fell, until I learned how to fall at my first lesson, that jinxed me. But falling is just a part of skating that I had to get over, and it is not bad, sometimes I just laugh at myself and get back up. I also bought my own skates before I started lessons which saved me a lot of pain and money, rentals can be killer on your feet. I bought the Riedell Red Ribbon 117, I am still using them even though I should upgrade. As for tips: Don't worry about falling Buy skates only from an authorized dealer, not online or from a sporting goods store. Use blade guards off ice and blade terry covers when you are not using your skates. If you can, try to get into an adult class. There are lots of other tips that you will learn as you begin skating, whether researching it online or from other skaters.

Ok....well i started at 9 going on 10 and i still skate i would say its sort-a hard to really figure skate and go very far in life with ice skating if you start at 15 but if you try really REALLY hard you might be able to Hope you do great

i was 9 when i started (here in the skating world, that makes me a late starter) of course i get the hang of it. you can get the hang of anything if you do it. you always fall, infact, the better you get, the MORE you fall! its just a sign that you are improving and learning something more difficult. ice skating is NOT inexpensive. the equiptment and ice time can rack up some big bucks. of course, like everything else, the more advanced you are the more its going to cost. being sure of yourself is a good thing in skating, you have to have confidence but be sure to have your ears open or you wont improve. competitively speaking: i can almost 110% ASSURE you, you wont go to the olympics or even jr. nationals. but you can still compete in tons of competitions big and small. (this point is always harder to tell the naive girls because they think ice princess is a true story) have fun skating. and remember, its not worth it unless you like it :D

oh my!

I was four or five. I was too young to remember for sure. I started out on someone else's skates and they did not fit me right. I kept falling over and over again. When I was about six, I got a pair of my own skates and they fit me better. We had a skating rink in our back yard, and I practised over and over again until I did not fall as often. It seems like everybody used to skate back then. Skaters fall, even at the professional level. You have to learn how to fall so that you do not hurt yourself and remember to do it if you know you are going to fall and it is at all possible. Try to fall with your hands first. As far as the skating is concerned, just keep trying, and don't let falling get you down or discourage you to keep it up. Skating is inexpensive fun and exercise.
