  • Answer:

the type of skates you should invest in will depend on many things, like if you think you'll be skating for only a while or just trying it out for fun, you're budget, and if you already considered just using rental skates to start out with. i would recommend Riedell boots because they are easier to break in than most boots. a few options: -http://www.newskates.com/Riedell_133_TS_Figure_Boots_p/qab120.htm -http://www.newskates.com/Ice_Skates_p/icried122.htm -http://www.newskates.com/MK_Figure_Blades_p/rimkb106.htm it also depends on whether or not you are knowledgeable of what kind of skate YOU personally would like, and you never know what you may feel more comfortable with. i suggest you first go to the pro shop at your rink, and have the skate technicians measure your feet. you can also try on skates there. it's a bit more promising for a good first time skate fit than ordering online. to get some info about riedell skates, check out there catalog: http://www.iskateriedell.com/catalog10/

Riedell boots are the best boots to start with. They are soft, easy to break in, and are sturdy.

Yellow Jello :]

Depends on where you are because I've seen some local pro shops that are at the rink that have great starter skates, but the starter skates that I had were the Jackson Artistes, they work for group lessons and up through the early freestyle levels (freestyle is some of the more advanced moves, jumps, spins etc). The skates I bought after those were the Jackson Freestyles and they cover most of your basic single jumps, minus the axel. I bought my skates off of skatebuys.com, and the Artistes are $109.99 there. The Freestyles are $179.99. I'd say go for the Freestyles just because it covers more levels.

You should try out Kinzie's Closet. They have a great selection of skates, they have beginner skating packages and they also have a chart that will allow you to pick your skate based on your skate level. Oh..they also have really good prices!

Go to your ice rink's pro shop! It's important for you to get fitted, and everyone there can answer any questions you have.

decent Reidell recreational ones are good to start with

Harlick has allwayyss worked great for me! Whether you get a stock boot (good for beginners) or custom. Countless elite athletes go to Phil at Harlick and it is just a really reliable boot! Take my word for it!

I used to skate and got Riedell ones. I'd used them at the level where I could do cross-overs and a few VERY basic spins, so roughly the intermediate freestyle levels at my rink. Mine cost between $150-200, I believe, but make sure that you get them adjusted at the store you go to. My feet are shaped somewhat oddly - there's a bone protruding at a location where most people's don't - and the techs at the store "punched" (that's what they called it!) out that part of the boot so it'd fit comfortably. Anyway, the Riedell ones were great for me, and probably will be for you too at your level. You could probably go with the Beginner/Recreational line: http://www.ice.riedellskates.com/CategoryDetail.aspx?CategoryName=Beginner-and-Recreational-Series Talk to the techs and experts at a skating store near you and try on the skates. I had to go to a few before I found what was right for me. Hope that helps! Have fun. :)

Go to the pro shop or ask the instructor where to buy skates. Get Riedell Medallions (on sale now) or Jackson Artiste skates.
