  • Answer:

Most new instructors in the US have no certs, especially at smaller resorts. If you meet the qualifications and understand that you will be working primarily with kids you will most likely be hired. Depending on the resort, you will go through a series of skiing and teaching clinics. Some places do these only at the beginning of the season, some do them throughout the season. Most people don't pay for PSIA certifications before they are employed at a resort and in some cases you can't even get into these clinics to get a certification unless you are sent there by your resort. Since you live in MS I suggest looking at larger resorts that may have employee housing. Instructing isn't always a steady gig and you may have days where you only get one or two lessons, so if you are paying rent off-property there won't be much left over during slow periods.

It depends on several things if you can get any job. First are there any openings when and where you are applying. Second do you have the skills that they need and want. Teaching skiing is as much a people skill as it is a snow sport skill. Are you willing and able to do the work that they need when they need it done. Most beginning instructors teach children and you need to be a baby sitter a friend, a playmate, a parent, a coach and traffic cop all while able to herd cats. If you can do all of that you could probably get a job teaching at a ski area. Many resorts have training programs for the instructional staff. Start by writing letters of inquiry to the resorts where you want to work and ask about the requirements for their instructors and any training programs they have. After you have done this investigate which resort may want you and check the staff and the head of the division. You get a job by applying for it. You keep the job by earning it. Good luck.
