  • Answer:

Your skis are not giving you enough flotation in powder. Powder skis are longer and much wider than park skis (as a result, they are also heavier). A powder ski will also have rocker in the tips and tails (ski curves up from the middle). When you lean back, you are no longer in an anatomically balanced position. A good powder ski will allow you to ski in soft snow with your weight balanced. A true powder ski is a very specialized ski and will perform poorly in other conditions. There are some rockered skis that do a pretty good job in powder, and are pretty good in other off-piste conditions. Volkl Gotama and Rossignol S7 are ones that come to mind.

From your question, I suspect that your technique is the problem more than the skis. Take a series of lessons from a qualified instructor on how to ski deep snow. The best time for this is in March in the Northern hemisphere. Try some of the Heli Ski groups in BC.
