What is the difference between twin tip skis and normal all-mountain downhill skis?

    If you never plan to ride backwards, you don't need twins. 99% of the people that own them can't answer this question because they do little more than "ski casually" and quite frankly, bought them in order to look cool. Twins are good for one thing...Park Skiing. If you don't ride rails, don't jib, don't ski backwards guess what...you don't need them. They fall below flat-tails when it comes to overall All-Mountain performance. They don't carve as well, generally, and twins are usually not as fast, because they are designed to be slower. If you freestyle...yeah, get twins. Beat the living snot out of them. They are harder to catch an edge with...usually. Some are lighter as well which makes them easier to get air and make grabs. If you are serious about improving your all around skiing skills, then stick to a flat-tail. If you are serious about freestyle, get twins.

I am going to have to put the other side of this argument in here. I agree that twin tips are made for park, and really do allot in park, but I do also notice other improvements they have. On general I have noticed the side cuts of your average twin tips differs from those of your generic all Mountain ski. since they are made to work the same way backwards as they do forwards they are very symmetrical, thus giving a easier and tighter turning radius. I will admit that a normal skier would not notice this difference, and they are mostly popular for the looks, but there is more to it than that for some of us. Though do remember that you can find quite a few good pairs of all Mountain skis that use a tail width the same as their tip width.
