At my local mountain, as long as you can get from top to bottom with out falling, you can become an instructor. Your ability as an individual comes into play, and how fast you catch on to techniques. We go through clinics until the training ski instructors decide you're ready, then you shadow a few lessons and then sent off on your own. A lot of it is wanting to be there, showing up and having a smile on your face like what Jim said. Now depending on where you live it may be different. I couldn't say exactly what the terms are for a really big mountain out west or in the Vermont area. You may, as Jim said, have to go through training for a season or be required previous experience. I can tell you though, that small beginnings may lead to some bigger.

Ask at the ski school where you want to work. The qualifications are different in different areas. Some schools require a season of training with them. Others require you have several years experience and others are asking you to smile and stand up on skis and are breathing.
