What do I need to Join a Ski Team?

How can I convince my parents to let me join my high school ski team?

  • I'm a junior with a GPA of around 3.8 hoping to go to NYU (which doesn't have a ski team, unfortunately, only a ski club), and I want to join my high school ski team next year ...show more

You will probably do better in school if you are happy and not moping about not being allowed to ski. But, of course, it's hard to 'convince' parents who are dead set against something, so that's too bad they won't cooperate. Do they realize that Dartmouth has a ski team and those skiers were all in high school ski teams and that they all got into an Ivy League school and still enjoyed their high school ski teams and probably science club, band, orchestra and whatever other activities Ivy Leaguers do in high school. It's not like you want to be a mass murderer or anything. It's skiing - a sport. They might not want to have to drive you out to the mountain, or whatever, so if you can make arrangements for a ride, or find out what sort of ride-sharing opportunities there are, that might help ease their mind. It might also help if you identify seniors on the ski team who got into good schools and have your parents talk to their parents. That might help them ease their concerns. Good luck.

Well, if you don't make it to NYU you can apply to Dartmouth College in NH, a top IVY League school. They have a ski team, and they're very close to skiing. Or Middlebury College in VT, they have their own ski area. So skiing would look pretty good on your college applications. I've heard these top schools look for unique characteristics about their applicants, something that make them stand out from the pack. A daughter of a coworker made it into Princeton because she was really good at the javelin throw, plus she had a great personality, which came through on her interview. So work on your grades extra hard, ask your parents to let you try. It's an Olympic year too--skiing should be really popular if the US wins. I think you're very fortunate to have a high school ski team. Tell your parents you'll have coaching which will help you progress safely. And tell them that NYU was recently in the news as the most expensive university in the country.
