How To Wax Skis?

How do you wax your skis?

  • I am sick of paying 25$ for something i know i can do myself for cheap. I just don't have a good idea on how to wax my skis. I have watched some tutorials that say i need a base ...show more

  • Answer:

I start with an edge tool that sharpens the base edge first and then the side. I drip the melted wax on the base of the ski and iron it in the base and then scrape the extra wax off and clean the edges of all wax. If you leave any wax on the edges it will be a very slippery edge. I use a common clothes iron set hot enough to melt the wax and iron the wax in a smooth motion. Move the iron fast do not over heat the base. Use the appropriate wax for your area. I wax my skis every 2 days of use and touch the edges every 2 wax cycles. A pair of skis need to be waxed many times to get the base saturated with wax. A base cleaner needs to be used if grease or dirt or resin from trees is in the base. I seldom use a cleaner because it does strip the wax out of the base which I then need to replace.

Other answers

A) Clean the bases with rubbing alcohol if really dirty, greasy, etc. (Not always needed.) B) Melt wax on my old clothing iron. (I like Swix CH6, but choose a wax for your conditions) C) Use the iron to spread the wax evenly. D) Scrape off excess wax with an old season pass. E) Buff out with a red 3M scrubbie. F) Buff more with a polishing cork. G) Clean excess wax off edges and sharpen edges. Any serious base grinding or major edge work I take to the shop.

you need to do the wax and sharpen the edges (when you put your skis into the shop they do both). You can certainly save over time if you ski a lot and thus need to do this frequently. so you need: Edges: angle guide (89 or 88 degrees) http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627908&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 file http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627955&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 couple of diamond stones for the edges http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627928&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 Wax: iron (a household one is fine) http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627905&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 Wax http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627905&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 Scraper http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442623254&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 Brush to reveal the structure http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627884&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 a vise to hold the skis - which you can likely rig up with a couple of clamp vises or a workmate everything else is optional. there are fancier edge guides that enable you to do the base edges etc. for cleaner - not a bad idea but you don't need to use it every time http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442627898&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882912 and unless you are a racer you wont need a horsehair brush or fibertex
