When and where did skiing start?

New to skiing - can i start with tele skiing?

  • I have never skied in my life and i am 31 yrs old. i would love to start. telemark skiing just seems like more fun.

  • Answer:

Tele is not harder on the knees, it's harder on the muscles, but it's actually easier on your joints. I think you should just get the tele skis, learn how to alpine ski on them, and then move onto telemark when you're a proficient alpiner. I don't know anyone who's started off on tele, but I know snowboarders who converted without knowing how to alpine. But you kind of need to know how to alpine in order to tele. Indeed, it's way more fun. There's so much more to it -- alpine is just leaning back and forth, tele is graceful and technical. You'll get lots of respect on the hill and some great legs.

As a Ski Instructor, I would recommend alpine skiing to start with. Telemarking takes very coordinated movements between hands poles and legs - beginning alpine skiers generally don't even start with poles. My advice would be spend a season on alpine, and then try telemarking. The best way to get better is through mileage - ski lots. However, everyone I know who telemarks loves it. most people don't go back. It's a lot harder on the knees too

Sir Mikael

I have a buddy that telemarks. Its definitely not as popular as fixed skis or snowboarding but he loves it. You can start with anything you like. It may not be the easiest to learn right off the bat but your starting at ground zero. Good luck.
