What length skis do i need?

  • I am 159cm tall, slim build, i was given 140cm hire skis but was told by an experienced skier that I would need to buy size 150 - 160 cm - what is best? I was a very good skier ...show more

  • Answer:

if your 159cm, i would definitely go for something between the 150 and 160. usually skis are measured from your chin to your nose. you dont want to have them be too long though.

The length of your skis should fall between the tip of your nose and the top of your head. What size you buy depends on you and what is available; if you are able to demo skis of different lengths before you buy, that's the best way to tell which you'll be most comfortable on. I'm a newbie, and at 5'6, I bought skis that are 146 which just hit the tip of my nose, but experienced skiers that are my height typically go for 160's. You're a little bit shorter, so I'd suggest trying out a pair of the rental/hire skis at that size before buying them that long. If they feel too big and you have issues turning them, try a size smaller. The one thing you'll find when shopping for shaped skis is that each manufacturer offers skis in slightly different lengths. For example, Rossignol women's skis come 146, 154, and 162 (depending on model) but K2 can come in 142, 149, 156, 163, 170, again depending on model.
