What do I need to Join a Ski Team?

What do I need to prepare my son to join the ski team at High school?

  • My son is interested in joining the school ski team. I do not ski and know very little about the sport. I went into the local ski shop and they hooked me up with some Rossi world cup ...show more

  • Answer:

Get hold of the coach of the race team, and see what the requirements for racers in your area are. Some areas have restrictions on size of skis, number of pairs per athlete, safety equipment. Get your son to start a dryland training program, focussing on leg and core strength. And as a proud parent, go to the races and MAKE SOME NOISE!! Support is everything.

If your son is a begginer, the lenth of the ski will not make a big difference. Shorter is better though when learning. He will also need ski boots and poles. You could go ski shop or try to find them at a ski swap in the fall. You should contact the coach and ask what he needs. Many teams provide helmets and speed suits. The main thing is to learn to ski and have fun. Dont worry about the other skiers times, just have him try to improve his over the season. He will pick it up fast and be skiing faster and faster each year. Good Luck

Ok, I'm a snowboarder, but I can help with a few questions. First off, you would want to have him start working on muscular endurance in his legs. Skiing and snowboarding are both very tiring for all leg muscles. And I can't give yuo any specific data, but I know the skii's you would want would need to be determined by riding style, weight, and height. And boot size. So there really is no sure way of knowing. Skis and boards have a specific size. For example, I have a Rome Flag 157 snowboard. The board from tail to tip is 157 cm, so I would want to buy a bag that is a little over that, I have a 160 bag. So bag size is determined by ski size. Also, GET HIM A HELMET! Best investment of my snowbaording career. I fell on my head WIT the helmet and got a concussion, imagine how bad it would be without it. Other then that, you want him to just start reading up on technique, and make sure his hamstrings and other tendons and muscles in his legs are flexible. Hope that helps
