What type of skis should i buy?

I skied Dynastar 4x4s for several years loved them. I wore them out and couldn't find any (except on e-bay and they wanted $800.00 but they were new.) I skied Switzerland two years ago and rented salomans. I now have switched to that brand and it is a great overall ski for crud, powder, racing but still sticks to slush. Oh well, what ya gunna do?

Rental skis are usually crappy, you shouldn't judge the brand by them. The ski depends what you're looking to do. You mostly ski groomers and powder only a few days out of the year, so you'd be wasting your money on a super wide ski. A ski with a lot of side cut will suck down in the powder, but you'll carve like no tomorrow on the groomers. A ski without a lot of side cut with an underfoot width of around 85-95 should perform pretty well on both, you'll have to put a little more energy into your turns on groomers but float more in powder over a narrower ski. If you're hitting jumps and rails or plan to, look at a twin-tip. As far as brands go, Volkls tend to be stiff. Stop by a few shops and look through their selection, test the flex by setting the tail on the floor, holding the tip and pushing on the middle, push hard. While skiing, you'll feel more bumps on a stiffer ski than a softer ski, but a stiffer ski is better for speed.
