How much do good downhill ski boots cost and poles?

Can I use cross country ski poles for downhill skiing?

  • I am planning on downhill skiing soon, and I only have cross-country poles (however, I do have the correct skis/boots). Is it possible to use cross country ski poles for downhill ...show more

  • Answer:

My local goodwill sells poles for $1.99. The local hill rents them for $5.00. XC poles will be way too long to be effective and will just throw you off. Get out the phone book and call around.

It would be possible, but they're certainly not the best option. Cross-country poles are longer than downhill ski poles, and are not meant to deal with the same type of forces. They might break and they certainly won't be the right size. The size of a pole is a very underrated factor in your skiing, it has a much larger impact than most think... I would suggest renting a pair of poles for a day, it won't be expensive if it's the only piece of gear you need, you get rid of the risk of breaking a pair of good cross-country poles and you can get the right-sized poles which can really improve you experience on the mountain.

No. They aren't strong enough so may break. XC poles are more for pushing than planting to turn. Plus, they are longer.
