Answer:
Actually, when I started skiing, I'd coat a pair of oldish jeans with ScotchGuard and wear a layer underneath (or two if it was colder) and it did the trick. I wear the appropriate layers, but I also pick up some of those chemical hand warmers and keep them handy just in case.

Don't blow a wad of cash on clothing your first time out. Nothing says "choad" like a guy in a $400 ski jacket going down the bunny hill on rental skis. If you are going to buy anything for the trip, get a good pair of ski socks. Something synthetic or a wool/synthetic blend. This will run you about $16. Good socks will help keep your feet warm and will give you a better fit. You can wear just about anything you want. Cotton should be avoided. A lot of first timers will wear nylon windpants over sweatpants or fleece pajama bottoms. It's not the best, but it's better than wearing jeans. If you can pick up some cheap snowpants, that would be the way to go. I picked up a cheap fleece zip-up shirt at K-mart last year for $10...only because I needed a cheap red zip-up. If you have a winter coat already, that should do the trick for your first couple of times skiing. If you don't have one, swing by a thrift store and see if they have something second hand. Wear a stocking cap and get a pair of inexpensive ski gloves. You can blow a bunch of cash on ski gear and then decide you hate the sport. A decent jacket will run you about $199 and pants about $100. Ski gloves can go for anywhere between $50-90. So...figure out if this is something you like and will do often before spending a lot of money....unless you are loaded and don't care....then just go to a ski shop and go hog wild with the credit card.

A winter jacket, thermal under wear, water repellent ski pants, mittens or gloves that are gortex insulated, a hat that covers your ears or a helmet with ear flaps (may be rented at some areas) Goggles or other eye protection, a turtleneck shirt with long sleeves, a wool or polypropylene sweater, not cotton or fleece that will pick up snow. Ski socks of a good quality. Depending on how long you are at the area, take some dancing shoes, and a swimsuit. Also a sunscreen of SPF 45+. drink water and ice your muscles at the end of the day. Take lessons from a qualified professional.

You will need to purchase ski pants and decent gloves. Try a sporting goods store such as Sports Authority. Make sure you have a warm jacket that is water resistant. You can purchase a shell and wear a warm sweater and thermal underwear underneath. Depending on the temperture you may also want to purchase a neck warmer which can be pulled up over your mouth and nose (turtle fur). Make sure you dress based on the weather and it is better to wear layers and over dress than under dress. If you are too warm you can remove the layers during the course of the day. A couple of other things to consider, a helmet and googles.

thermal underwear, snow pants (from big 5 or any sporting good stores), turtleneck, waterproof jacket, ski mask, beanie. i've recently gone skiing and it was FREEZING cause it was raining and snowing at the same time like CRAZY so i suggest u bring lots of layers so u can take off some when it gets hot and stay warm if its cold. also an extra drive back home/hotel/watever outfit is also good cause i was soaking wet when we had to drive back to our hotel which was like an hour away!
