What's the best way to go about painting my skis?

I'm not much of a craftsman, or whatever you want to call it, but I am artistic and would love to have skis no one else has. Is there a specific kind of paint I should use? Is ...show more

Answer:
I tried this a bunch of years ago. The first time I didn't sand the topsheet at all. Bad idea because all I had was new paint over scratched skis. It was horrorshow. Then the new paint on the sidewalls started to get scratched off. It looked really piss-poor. I sanded everything down again by hand using a sanding block. It didn't take much to get the old gloss coat off. I used a few different grits of sandpaper as well. I didn't use a machine sander because I didn't want to chance sanding down too far. I chose a different paint scheme, taped the sidewalls so they wouldn't get new paint at all, and laid out my stencils on the top. I used a higher quality Krylon spray paint, but still not something you can buy at any hardware store. Once it dried, I hit the top side with a few coats of heavy duty clear-coat, then untaped the sidewalls and hit the whole top and side with more clear-coat. The paint on the topsheet held up for the rest of the season and only a small amount of flaking along the sidewall. I got new planks the next year.

Sounds like a lot of people have tried this in the past with mixed results. For past ski tests we have tried all sorts of pants. The best method we have come up with was sand the top sheet lightly just to get good adhesion. The best pant I have found was an epoxy based paint. You can find it at most marine specialty shops. The epoxy in the paint bonds to the ski better and will never chip. Spray paints don't hold up over time so use something that will last. Good luck

Krylon has some plastic paint primer on the market the past few years that seems to etch a the plastic so another paint can bond better to the surface. I suggest you go to Goodwill or St Vinnies and buy a pair of old ones to practice on before you use the paint on your good ones. With most of the epoxy finish on the gear now, you have to sand like crazy to do much more than a surface etch to them. Maybe a small orbital sander to give a smooth finish before you paint it. It would be interesting to see photos of the finish product. Have fun, Good luck. There are many websites that explain how to paint on an epoxy finish.

iv'e done this w/ a pair of french skis as i don't want anyone i knew to know i was using french crap. do not sand all the way thru the protective plastic, just enough to prep to take the paint (you can but just don't go all the way thru the top layer, the paint isn't of any consequence to the propeties but the top skin is). this also depends on the ski, the shae skis of today use the topsheet more for structure than the skis of old, this is why it's important not to sand too much. i used ordinary spray paint from ace hardware and it's lasted 14 years.
