Welcome back to the sport. And it sure has changed in the past 10 years, let alone 20. Your height is about 165 cm. and your skill level is progressing and I expect you will return to the sport and want to stay with it. I'm partial to K2 as a brand and they have developed a very good women's design ski. This is the Luv series from K2 and many of the advanced level women instructors I work with are just plain in love with theirs. I suggest you try to locate a pair about 155 cm and with bindings budget about $350 at the most for a top condition pair of the true luv skis. This may not be easy to do but try the different on line sources. If you check the K2 web page you should be able to compare the different models. Now on to a couple other questions you asked. Freestyle skis are designed mainly for turns and quick response and some aerial stunts. The all mountain or carvers are designed more for a compromise that does all types of skiing pretty good but are not a type specific ski. There are better powder skis or hardpack or park and fall designs, a carver or all mountain ski is a good compromise for a recreational skier who is not racing, park, freestyle or powder specific. You also need a new pair of boots that fit your foot properly, get checked for cants and have some custom foot beds. Take a set of lessons from a qualified professional instructor when you get on the slopes. The new design skis require a more balanced stance and more subtle movements. Also start a workout programm to develop your core body strength and to improve your balance. I suggest a jump rope 15 minutes a day working up to every day and then increase your time as you are able. Also 2 times a week at least 2-4 hours of ball room dancing. Swimming and diving are also good. Have fun and welcome back.

I can only help you if you do freestyle. If you do then twintips. There great for tricks and if you do buy them buy them shorter than you would regular skies cause its much eisier to spin and stuff like that.

Carving skis have really sharp edges and the sidewall(side cut) is different; they're for making deep, strong turns. They could also be considered racing skis. They are usually quite stiff to hold on to the snow. Freestyle skis are almost always "twin tips" which means that the rear end of the ski is curved like the front, so the skier can land tricks backwards. Freestyle skis also have a variety of flex to them, depending on personal preference. All terrain skis are sometimes twin tips, but they don't have to be. They are not too stiff, therefore they have forgiveness in them. They are a good ski for someone who usually goes all over the mountain. This is the type of ski you are probably looking for. As for your ski length, it depends on your height and ability. With your height and ability, you could have a ski length of 155 - 175. I would go closer to 175, as longer skis are preferred as your ability advances. Of course, you can always get longer if you prefer it. Good online sites to buy skis are : http://www.evogear.com/default.aspx http://www.backcountry.com/ They have good prices, especially now during the off-season.
