  • Answer:

Alpine skiing is when you ski down a hill, like at a resort or a ski area. This includes racing (slalom). slalom is a form of alpine racing. Alpine is downhill as Nordic is on flatter ground (cross country).

Tom C has it right except that all ski dicaplines that are on a slope are considered alpine. Nordic is cross country skiing across flat ground. Within Alpine there is recreational skiing, racing, and freestyle. recreational skiing covers everything from your bunny hill kid to the guys chest deep in powder. Racing is with the gates and freestyle is anything with jumps and tricks. i could go into way further detail if it is needed.

Alpine skiing involves skiing down a hill, you don't need gates to do alpine skiing, although you can. Slalom skiing is a component of alpine skiing that involves skiing through gates. Skiing is usually distinguished between Alpine, which is skiing down a mountain or hill, and cross country skiing which is a different technique, done on flat or variable terrain.
