Why are my gums itchy when i floss between my teeth?

When I floss my teeth in between my teeth and gums, should my "flossing motion" be against the gums, against the teeth, or both?

  • Answer:

That's a great question. The "flossing motion" should be against the tooth. Try to curve the floss around the base of the tooth as you dive into the pocket. That still cleans the gum side, but is safer since you won't risk cutting the gums (that's called a floss cut). Always hug the tooth when you floss. Hope that helps. - Dr. B
