Why shouldn't most Indian Engineering colleges (CS/IT department) be shutdown in favor of coursera / edx ?
-
I have added IITs as topic only to draw opinions from the better college students apart from other people. Having taken many courses on coursera by now I strongly feel we do not need to keep CS/IT department in most of the colleges in India. ( I am a working professional with 6+ years experience. I didn't study CS/IT but I closely monitored the entire education process ) Government should legitimize coursera ( and similar platforms ), open centers where people can have access to computing and internet facilities etc. What can be the argument in favor of retaining existing education infrastructure ? To put some more arguments : 1. Most engineering colleges in India have acute shortage of competent faculty to teach Computer Science. On the other hand most teachers on Coursera are PhD in Computer Science and authorities in their subjects. Often they are from top 30 CS departments in the world. Students are un-necessarily bound in attending classes and wasting time where they are not learning but just going through motions. 2. The quality of research at IITs is decent (at best compared with rest of the world) and drops sharply and exponentially afterwards with rare flashes of brilliance from students and almost no contribution by faculty. Hence the arguments in favor or universities can be centre for incubation of research doesn't stick ( in my opinionĀ for most Indian colleges) 3. Most of CS/IT faculty in India cannot write code by itself. The method of teaching coding / programming is regressive. The teachers do not know which resource are to refer themselves. And they are completely 4. Even the brightest students are so unskilled after 4 years that they are desperate for jobs let aside earning a degree. You can often find them asking for career tips on how to "restart their career". 5. "Incompetent" middle management is often the most common hindrance for bright people. By connecting the best brain to best resources, optimal knowledge transfer can be reached. Also those interested in CS do not need to first go through un-necessary Physics and Chemistry which is not related. 6. Many companies will be directly willing to hire students from any part of India based on their Quora credentials. And if in some way the universities would also recognize the students, 7. Despite all the arguments in favor of living in hostels etc. the most important purpose of education is the content of the topics itself. 8. What is the value of a degree if at the end of it you can't pass 80% of the courses which people in foreign universities are studying. 9. CS/IT education is unique compared to other disciplines. 10. IT Skill development and mitigating hiring problems has become an industry due to poor colleges. On the lower end there are this computer learning centers in various parts of the city. And a plethora of online websites with little or no credibility. This is also leading many students confused. (NOTE: I have a fair understanding of quality of education / resources at IIT. In Indian context they are centers of excellence. My suggestion is that by freeing up resources government can focus on opening more centers of excellence than letting universities mushroom which are waste of 4 years for most students ) (NOTE: The IT department in NIT Jaipur had already been closed down due to lack of faculty. In mere numbers they are not able to run the CS department.)

I understand your intent and anguish at the pathetic state of the large number of engineering colleges.. I agree on their state. But its stretching things far with this argument.... Will give reasons. 1. The role of a great teacher in person is never going to be undone by online courses, however good they are. We need more such Profs.... Going the other way does not help. 2. Its not only teaching... Who will do research here? You cannot learn enough without a research project. 3. Strength is always internal. As an Indian, I would certainly prefer to see strong Indian Academia and Research. (I was in Defence R&D earlier. So, know how important it is) Am sure others will give you a few more reasons... There are engineering colleges getting shut down today. coz they just came up without any teachers or infrastructure.. Lets try to believe...

Well I agree to the most of the arguments you have mentioned. However, there are few points to consider. 1. What would be the replacements of the labs? I have attended few courses on Coursera. Even if we can somehow regularize software labs, we cannot make a replacement of the hardware labs as of now. 2. Is learning a top priority for most of the students? This is a big question. Most of the students here want to study CS/IT because of the greater scopes and higher lifestyle, rather than the educational and magical part of CS. 3. Although web-medium is very popular but we still need massive infrastructure makeover to support web-based learning pervasively. Leave aside other things that campus provides. On the other hand, I would advise a solution which would take the benefits of both ways. If we can popularize Coursera, EdX among people, then interested students who are not getting enough scope because of our education system, can take the opportunity to prove their mettle. I guess that few of the enthusiastic faculties will also come forward and take the initiative to encourage the students to go through Coursera etc. and make these courses an unofficial parallel syllabi. To sum it up, it's an excellent idea. We are accumulative good amount of resources through NPTEL, Coursera etc. But people should know this and use this with their own intention. They should not be forced. If we force them, then that would be the same mistake what has been done at the early ages.
