Use your own media as an addition to yellow pages which many people still refer to for projects like these. What I mean is: Is there a possibility of using your company's actual roof and create a text message on it. Is there anyone else that you can 'roof' for and use the media as an advertising media? Do you have a van that you can do a very attention seeking ad panel? When you work somewhere, can you put up a standee - near the door entrance - a bit like those police signage on roads type, but more attractive of course. People are always curious about work-in-progress, so why not a little mileage as well. I think owners don't care if you do that anyway. For specialist job like roofing, you would also need to create ties and opportunities with main contractors. You need to develop some materials/presentation about your company to them. These are the people with majority of the projects/deals in place and will need sub-contractors like your company. Don't expect ads to do it all because in your field, you need to work out what communication media and marketing strategy is better.

It's all about finding your target customer. If the magazine was targetted towards people who wanted new roofs on their houses how many calls do you think you would of gotten then? you may want to check out BatAds.com, it's a online marketplace for buying and selling advertising space. Maybe you will find some better options there for your target customer.

For cheap ways to advertise signs are a great. When working at a house you can use small coroplast signs in the front lawn. Having your truck/s lettered. Fliers and so on are all cheap ways to advertise also. Putting things on Craigslist. and other sites like that. Also something that is overlooked but having a good eye catching logo to represent your company helps more then you realize.

I think you need to figure out who you, as a company, appeal to. Are your prices reasonable or are they significantly higher than average because the quality is that much better? Should you be advertising just for individual families or should you also appeal to insurance companies who are responsible to fix homes, as well? These advertising mediums you've mentioned will mean nothing if you don't have these questions answered first. Do you know who read the yellow pages? the internet web page? I would recommend you conduct a survery to see where and what your current customers like to read, watch, and see locally. Maybe it might be more worth it to put up a bill board? These are questions you can answer only with research. Guessing always results with failure!
