What jobs can you have as an architect?

What is a good resource to find entry level UX designer jobs and Information Architect jobs?

  • Answer:

This answer won't work for many people, but it is the best answer I know, so I'm sorry for those whom it won't work. The best place for entry level design jobs is w/ the career services department of the design school you graduated from. Yes, if you didn't go to design school, or a university w/ a design program you're kinda out of luck. Yes, if you didn't go to school at all, you're kinda out of luck. But if I'm looking for entry-level designers, as a hiring manager, my best source of talent are the schools that I trust to create graduates with the skills I need. Ok, one other way ... Look at BIG companies. Companies that have college recruitment programs usually are the only ones that hire entry level. If they have internships, go for those. Agencies usually don't have college recruitment services but they do hire junior designers more because agency culture is set up as a pyramid scheme Otherwise, there is no difference between Jr. recruitment and sr. recruitment. Coroflot and Behance are great design resources.

I often recommend companies look for bright new design talent on Craigslist.  I understand it has been a great resource for all involved.

1. Your classmates / Alumni that you have studied with. Knowing someone at a company is usually an easier step in the door. Reaching out to someone who has gone to the same school as you is surprisingly easy and helpful for finding out what a place is like to work for and if they would recommend it. They can often forward you to the right person. Companies are way more likely to want to recruit people who are a referral. 2. Change your description / city / looking for on LinkedIN, so that recruiters can find you. I've received many requests from recruiters just because of my linkedIN profile, so make sure everything is updated. 3. Online Job Boards: A lot of companies also list their openings on LinkedIN aswell as Coroflot, Behance, Ixda. But you can imagine there are a lot of smaller companies that don't list their openings, or they only list openings for Sr Positions. It is worth getting in touch with the recruiter directly to see if they have any other positions they are looking to fill as well. 4. Be active on Behance, Dribbble, forums, etc. Usually it is the responsibility of other designers at the company and not recruiters to recruit designer they think are awesome, and will seek out people they see on forums or blogs.

If you are looking for a local UX or IA job, one of your best options would be to attend events where these professionals are likely to gather. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the field and meet other UX and IA professionals. The structure of these events can vary. Sometimes, people will volunteer to give presentations or lightning talks about a topic. Maybe there is a book club where members discuss user experience literature on a monthly basis. Hosting webinars (e.g. http://www.uie.com/events/virtual_seminars/ virtual seminars) is popular. Also, there is likely to be free food and drinks, giveaways, and discounts on things like books and software. Collaboration is extremely important and attending (and actively participating in) these events is one way to show that you want to share your knowledge, and learn from others. Many companies sponsor these events and recruit from them. Employees are encouraged to recommend potential new employees, and if you develop relationships with people at these events, they are likely to recommend you to their employers. Visiting https://uxpa.org/chapters-sigs-by-region, http://www.meetup.com/, http://www.ixda.org/local/network, and http://www.eventbrite.com/ to locate these events is a good start. If you cannot find any events or groups, then consider starting one!
