I would talk to her physician about seeing someone to teach her bowel retraining. Since she had the colostomy bag for 6 years, she is going to have to retrain her bowels. Some of the common stool softeners for geriatric patients are OTC Colace, or Miralax, or even a vegetable type laxative. I would check with her physician to find out what he/she recommends. Also, make sure she is staying hydrated and getting up and walking around frequently... to prevent constipation. Also, if she is taking any kind of pain medications, this can cause constipation too.
