Should a Computer Science BTech student from an IIT prepare for IAS?
-
I am currently in my 2nd year. Although I like my branch and technology and I am confident enough of getting myself a decently paying job, I am attracted towards IAS mainly because of the social status and other benefits. Some of my family members also motivate me to pursue it. However high-paying a private sector job might be, it comes nowhere close to IAS in terms of power and respect. Are the benefits of IAS big enough to diminish the cons/compromises? Would all my effort so far including my degree from IIT go in vain if I prepare for IAS? Not to mention that to get a good cadre in IAS, I'll have to slog hard once again. After doing it once to get into IIT, I am not sure I have enough will to repeat it again with similar success. If not IAS, I plan to do MS or MBA from a good foreign university some time in future.

Answer:
"⦠a Computer Science BTech student from an IITâ¦" Not one word in that phrase tells me of any reason not to try for IAS. In fact, each part of that (CS, BTech, student, IIT) is a compelling reason to do so. But then I looked at the question's description. Then I see why you shouldn't. I don't blame you, they're the same reasons why many go for IAS. Go ahead.

Two points: 1. You are torn between two GOOD choices. Either way your life would be good. 2. Choosing something cannot be done by others. It should be a personal decision and match your sensibilities and the way of living as you know. My take? Chill and complete engineering with decent grades. Join a company and enjoy for an year. Quit it and start preparing for exams and if you get well and good, if you don't you can always do MS or MBA considering you will still be young.

well, If you are a guy from IIT or any other Engineering college and want to pour your career in IAS. All the Best ! But on the other hand, You totally lost the purpose..! I need not say because you are already from an esteemed college and must have a beautiful mind. why did you choose engineering as your field ? if you are easily being swayed by your family members for changing the field... I am extremely sorry if i am being offensive.. SAD but TRUE..!
