What is the etymology of term "schema" in relational database design?
-
I am reading this gem of a book http://infolab.stanford.edu/~ullman/focs/ch08.pdf And the author uses the word "Scheme" to refer to schema. Since when the word "schema" start getting used?
-
Answer:
I think the use of "database schema" is pretty old and it's not clear to me at all that "database scheme" was actually first. A quite old reference using "schema" is for example: ZANIOLO, C. Analysis and design of relational schemata for database systems. Ph.D. thesis, Computer Sci. Dep. Rep. UCLA-ENG-7669, UCLA, Los Angeles, Calif., July 1976.
