Gout is the build up of uric acid crystals in the blood and those crystals collect around joints and can cause excruciating pain. However, with modern medicine this can be controlled. A change in diet is often necessary as some foods can exacerbate the problem, especially meat offal such as liver and kidney etc. Most of the time though it has a genetic component. It is NOT caused by excess alcohol although that can make things worse.
