Dassara is celebrated as Navarathiri (nava=9; rathiri=night) in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. Per mythology it is the time when Rama (an avatar of Lord Vishnu) fought and killed Ravana (the evil king who lived in Sri Lanka) because he abducted Rama's wfe. It is also celebrated to commorate the slaying of Mahishashuran by Goddess Durga/Kali. Typically people in Tamil Nadu have a set up at home which has 10 steps loaded with figurines of deities and other things (people use their imagination and create some setups such as a toy town center and such) and invite their friends and family to come over in the evenings during which time, food is prepared and offered to the Gods. While people are leaving, they are given some gifts. At hte end of the 10 days, the whole setup is removed.
