For tax purposes, Exempt means your income is so low that you don't owe income tax at all. Non-Exempt means you expect to make more than $6000 if a dependent and $10000 if not a dependent. If you are not a dependent, single/2 is the better choice for your W-4, NOT single/0. Single/0 holds out too much. Full time at $8.50/hr =$17K a year. Use single/2.
