How do you get rid of hiccups?

I am a singer, and I got hiccups right before a big show once. It freaked me out a little. Anyone know how to get rid of them easily? Or why we even get hiccups?

I learned this in 7th grade science class and it works most of the time... stand up... and breath in five times hard. not like HHhhhh but really hard HHHHHHHHHH. after you finish sit down and relax... this will release the diaphragm (I hope I said that right) from its position that gives you hiccups.

I think it happens when your diaphragm spasms. what has helped me multiple times (I get them really often when I'm in a laughing fit and don't breathe properly) is just to relax, sit up/ or stand up straight, and slowly breathe in and breathe out several times and this stops the contractions in the diaphragm.....and hiccups gone!

this may sound rediculous but it works everytime well both of these do... 1. ten quick tiny sips of water 2. get a glass of soda or water (works quicker with soda) look straight foucusing on something then take a sip slowly while still looking straight raise the glass until you see the bottom (still looking straight) the slowly bring the glass back down and take a sip repeat that like 5 times

Hiccups result from an irritation of the diaphragm (the big muscle under your lungs that helps you breathe). That is why any number of different things can help, but don't always help. Drinking a whole glass of water causes you to hold your breath during the drinking, then you normally take a big breath afterward, thereby stretching out your diaphragm. Same with holding your breath, probably similar for eating peanut butter, hyperventilating, and other remedies. If they last more than a day, you should see a doctor.

Believe it or not, a spoonful of peanut butter will knock them right out. I don't know why or how it works, but I've never seen it fail yet! Instantly, too!

u get hiccups because your body isnt getting enough oxygen, which is normal to occur on occasion. to stop them u must close off the senses. have someone stand behind you and place their hands over your ears, while you hold your nose and drink a glass of water quickly. this will stop them
