What does the tax code 522L/1 mean?

I have just started a new job and my tax code is 522L/1. Does the '1' mean I am paying emergency tax?

  • Answer:

The "1" means that you tax code is operated on a week one basis. This means that you will not get the full benefit of your personal allowances in the current year -usually because HMRC does not have the full employment details for you. It's in your interest to supply all relevant info to them - or you will usually have to wait until the end of the tax year on 5 April 2008 until your repayment claim can even be considered. Also, employers have until 19 May 2008 to supply all information regading their employees for any one tax year - so it is obvious that you may well have to wait quite a few months after 5 April to actually get your money! If you are in any doubt, contact your local HMRC office and ask them what they would need to restore you to a cumulative tax code. Don't forget to supply your National Insurance Number - this is what the tax system is based upon, and Tax district reference number if possible. Good luck!

yes the 1 mean you are paying on a week 1 or month 1 basis. depending on when you get paid basically you will be paying more tax than you are supposed too. if you have worked previously in this tax year (from 6th April 07) then you should of been given a P45 from you last employer. hand this to you new employer and they can assign the code on the P45 which should just be 522L if you do not have a P45 form. ask you employer for a P46 form, fill your section out and the employer will fill their section and send the form off to the Inland Revenue. after a few weeks your employer will receive notice of your correct code and apply it to the next available pay day. once the correct code is applied, you tax wil lbe adjusted and you should be refunded any over paid tax to date.

No, because you have a standard tax code. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=533039
