This year it comes 0n 25 october Tuesday (Chaturdasi) (South India) and 25 th October Wednessday Amaavaasya.(North India) The arrival of Lakshmi is Celeberated with a lot lights/crackers/Sweets/New clothes/Pooja/Gifts etc. Deepam(Lights)+Aavali (garland)=Deepaavali(elitist language)---Diwali(rural language) Many stories are told --they differ from Region to Region Suras (Divine souls) and their cousins Asuras (Devils/Demons) wanted to attain Immortality (Eternity)-- They churned Milk Ocean (Ksheera Saagaram) with Meru mountain (in Heaven--not Himalayas)and Vaasuki (a long serpent as rope) and a Kurma Turtle) served as base First came the most detrimental/dangerous POISON=HALAA HALAM---Nobody including Brahma,Vishnu could save the Universe--Lord SIVA drank the poison and retained in His neck portion He saved the Universe. Next came a number of things--One white Elephant (Iravadham)--one flying horse (Ucchai Sravas)--one Divine cow (Kaamadhenu)--The God of Wealth (Dhanvantri) and Goddess of Wealth (Lakshmi) on 13 th day (Dhan Theras--Triyodasi) and finally on Deepavali day The Divine Nectar (Amrutham) Mrth=Death---Amruth=No death=Eternity came.So the Festival of Lights
