How much to pay gardener?

How much tax and national insurance will i have to pay as a self employed gardener?

  • me and a friend are setting up a garden maintenance business we aim to get 70 hours of work a week thats 35 hours each and charge 10pounds an hour . how much tax and national ...show more

  • Answer:

Google will tell you the National insurance rates for self employed people. You will not pay tax on £350 per week. You pay tax on your profit which is income less expenses. As you have no basic knowledge of finance it would pay you to make an appointment with an accountant. He can advise on which expenses.i.e.tools,petrol,materials etc are tax deductible. He will save you more money than you pay him.

My brother has this type of business..and never gets that much work a week....you need to check how many other similar businesses there are in your area before starting and make sure that your advertising and literature displays your qualifications ..this is a competitive area now. The other answerers are right - you'll have a couple of months a year when you wont work at all so you need to put aside money for those periods. You wont pay tax on that income...but once you've paid N.I. petrol, insurance etc. you wont have much left..ring up other companies pretending to be a potential client and learn how much they are charging, you probably should be thinking of charging £15,00 an hour.

If you manage to earn £14,000 a year, you'll pay £2,912 income tax - but life's more complicated than that. I suggest you set up the business as a partnership and agree that you will split the profits, costs and liabilities equally. Register with the Inland Revenue and they'll start collecting National Insurance contributions at £2.70 a week each. Keep proper books showing your income (from fees charged), your expenses and overheads. That will allow you to calculate your profit and you are taxed on that. Bear in mind that garden maintenance is heavily dependent on the weather and you won't be able to work for some of the year. It's also advisable to have insurance in case you accidentally poison someone's expensive fish or dig up an electric cable. £10 an hour each is rather cheap - I suggest you charge more.

No one can tell you how much tax you will pay because your tax is not worked out on how much you bring in, its based on how much you make, ie profit from income less expenses. However I do agree that you should seek business advice first before starting up.
