You need to add information in the META tags in the html/jsp pages. Search for META on google. Once you update these setting you need to wait for the search engines to run indexing.

Basically what you need is links to your site from other websites that are already listed on Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. When the search engines "crawl" the sites that have links to your site, they will find your site and then list it on their search engine. For search engines, I believe it's about how many hits you get, or, maybe you pay for it, I'm not so sure.
