What is science research all about?

For an IT graduate aspiring to become a CS researcher, what are the ways in which I can strengthen my mathematics foundation so that I am able to understand and form analytical models in computer science research?

  • I come from an IT background both in my undergrad degree and my masters degree. I have had fundamental courses of computer science, basic mathematics courses (discrete maths, computational maths, little of calculus). But due to the syllabus designed in my programs, it wasn't deep enough to understand its application in computer science research. I want to understand how to apply mathematics in CS research? How to design mathematical models for various CS problems? What should I do to strengthen my mathematics background so that I can apply them in my research work?

It will really depend on what kind of research you want to do. If you're interested in machine learning or dealing with signals in any way, I would go back to your old prob/stats book and linear algebra book, and review those. Being comfortable dealing with matrixes (eigenvalues, decomposition, etc), and probabilities (distributions, bayes nets, max likelihood and max a posteriori probability models) are a must! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaussian_distribution http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_decomposition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_network http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_likelihood http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_a_posteriori_estimation
