What to do in Amarang, Indonesia during a business trip?

What gift should I bring back from Indonesia?

  • Hello, I am in Jakarta for a business trip and going back to Russia next week. Can you recommend some special things that can be good gifts for parents? Thnx.

  • Answer:

Hi, I'm a Dutch person. I lived and worked 9 years on Java. Always need to bring gifts for my parents when I'm on leave... If you want good choice, fixed price and easy trip: the best thing is to take a taxi to Sarinah Department Store, at the Jalan Thamrin. They have a floor with local artifacts and handicrafts of nice quality and variety. - Wooden masks to hang up the wall are easy to carry. - Cute little wooden carved boxes, to contain jewelry or sigarettes. Easy to carry and very pretty. - Coffee, tea and spices from all the different islands of Indonesia, wrapped traditionally in a pretty box or carved bamboo. - Shadow puppets are very typical for Java. Wooden puppets are called Wayang Golek, and flat leather puppets are called Wayang Kulit. - Silver artifacts from Yogyakarta, like miniature temples or buffalo-riders, or necklace/bracelet. The silver from Yogyakarta has a typical white gloss, and it's light and not very expensive. - Clothes made of batik-material are traditional and pretty. But do you know what size to buy for your parents? Maybe a scarf or a nice table cloth, or pillow covers made of batik would be a good present. Enjoy shopping, wish I could join you..... Cheers!

Batik can be the best gifts.. You also can buy Kebaya for your mom. It's Indonesian traditional clothes. You can find those stuff in 1. Pasaraya Grande at Blok M 2. Keris Galery in Lippo Karawaci Supermall, or Puri Indah Mall Local Wooden craft or silver jewerly also nice for gifts but a bit difficult to find it in Jakarta. Bali or Yogyakarta is the place for these stuffs... If you like arts, you can go to Pasar Seni Ancol..and find some interesting gifts there..

Definitely Batik. The wood will crack in russia becuase of the dry climate. A lot of the other things are bulky and fragile. Really hard to bring back in a suitcase. When I was in Surabaya I found some beautiful batik table clothes, napkins and table runners in a variety of colors. You can't go wrong with that! Look for a store called Mirota Batik or Matahari. It is not unusual for someone to follow you around the store and take the things from you and give you a slip to claim it at the register as you shop. I thought it was odd at first, but I guess it is customary.
