Will massage help Sciatica?

I think i have sciatica, can a massage help?

  • the joints in my sacral nerve give me uncomfortable irritation, and makes me very uncomfortable, i always find myself trying to make it click...URGENT. I FEEL REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE.

  • Answer:

"...trying to make it click" sounds more like a joint problem than sciatica which is more of a nerve problem. If you call some MT's and find one who can do a "piriformas release" they can probably help you or refer you to the appropriate medical professional.

You are more likely to get benefit from exercise or physiotherapy.

A massage can help relax the lower back, gluteal and hamstring muscles which go into reflex spasm from sciatic nerve inflammation. If the sciatica is from a disc bulge, you should be careful twisting to try and pop it. A slow twisting motion in the wrong direction can cause more disc damage or strain muscles. Sometimes low back exercises in extension can affect the disc. Try the exercises at the resource below and see a good chiropractor for a proper adjustment.

If it is sciatica the problem is often in the base/lower spine not where the pain is. The best treatment is to hang! Get a bar across a door frame, a wardrobe, or a banister and hang for as long as you can comfortably. Also, dont use hot OR cold, use both half hour hot, 15 min break half hour cold. Hot relieves pain and cold takes away swelling. Also treat base of spine in the same way. Physio is good, put me on the equivalent of a medieval rack! but it worked! Once you suffer though, you do have to think twice all the time! Good luck

I have this same problem occasionally. Lay on your back, flat on the floor. Lay your hands flat one on top of the other under the Low spine or tail bone, and flex your back. By moving your hands up and down about 1 inch you should be able to find the spot that will POP. This is how I fix my low back. Of course my Chiropractor can do it. But this is free. Good Luck.

A chiropracter could probably do you good.

It could do. The best long term management is to get into regular stretching. Yoga is a good for releasing and giving the body the correct support. If you are able to also do Alexander Technique (this is quite a long process) this improves your posture in a natural, unforced way. It is an awful condition. The above should give long term relief by releasing, lengthening and supporting the body. Good luck!

Try stretching and I mean stretching until it hurts - bend over and touch the floor and push your bum in the air. Yoga can help long term and swimming is excellent. Massage doesn't really help long term but can give some short term release. If you absolutely have to make it click try this BUT BE CAREFUL: sit down in a chair with arms completely relax your lower trunk from the navel / hips down twist to the right (or left whichever feels best) by pulling on the arm of the chair - you can also position it next to the wall and push off that as well as pulling. As long as you are completely relaxed your lower spine should 'click' and realingn JUST BE CAREFUL IT CAN BE PAINFUL AND IF NOT DONE CORRECTLY CAN CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS
