Is the blue gel in ice pack poisonous?

Anybody know a good recipe for a ice gel pack? How to make your own.?

  • Answer:

Homemade Gel Pack 3 cups water 1 cup rubbing alcohol 1. Mix, then seal in a freezer bag, then encase in a second bag. 2. Place in the freezer. 3. Note: The more alcohol you use, the softer the pack will be, making it more gentle on injuries than an ice pack.

3 cups water, one cup rubbing alcohol. Put in one large ziplock bag and seal, then put in another large ziplock bag and seal. Make sure the bags are zipped well. Then put in the freezer.

A bag of frozen peas works nicely.

A lady I knew made universal hot/cold packs by taking rice and sewing it into a pouch with fabric over it. Sort of like a pillow stuffed with rice, but smaller. It was nice because I could freeze it for a cold pack or microwave it for a hot pack. However, my young son destroyed it and my husband hated the smell of it. It didn't bother me.

A quick and easy way is to simply fill Aquafina water bottles, replace the cap and freeze!

Make your own ice pack Materials you will need A ziploc bag, or similar that has a water tight seal Rubbing alcohol. Water. Measuring cup. (optional) Food coloring. Basically you will want to go for a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of water:rubbing alcohol. The book goes for a 3:1 ratio, but this morning when I checked it out, it was a bit slushier than I wanted, so I added more water to see if it would freeze up more. It did, and almost too much. It felt pretty solid when I took it out, but it mushed up pretty easily. Perhaps a 3.5:1 ratio leaning still towards a 4:1 ratio. Instructions for you pedants out there Pour 2 cups of water into your ziploc bag. Pour 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol into the ziploc bag. Optionally add a few drops of your favorite food coloring dye. Close ziploc bag. Squish around the color (if added), and put in freezer. This can be reused as needed, just be sure to check the integrity of the bag from time to time for leaks. You could put the ziploc bag in another ziploc bag to help with that. Also, you want to be careful not to ever put ice directly on your skin for long periods of time as that is way too cold. Always have a towel, shirt, sock for an insulating layer. Update: Ok, 4:1 is definitely too much water. After a few days in, it is too solid to really squish around. I wonder if having the 3:1 in the freezer for 24hrs instead of just overnight would be more solid. I’ll give it a shot. Update (2): Ok, I’ll fess up. The 3:1 ratio after at least 24hrs is indeed the best. I’m going back in the corner now to think about what I’ve done.
