Is it worth taking AP Classes senior year?

How many AP classes are you taking this year?

  • Sophomore year I took AP Bio. Junior year I am going to be taking AP Lang, AP Stats, AP Psych, and AP US History. Senior year I am going to be taking AP Physics, AP Lit, and AP ...show more

  • Answer:

The most I ever took in one year was in my junior year, when I did AP U.S. History, AP Lang, AP French, AP Computer Science, and AP Chem. Yes, colleges view them as thaaat good. They would much rather see a B in an AP class than an A in a regular class (of course, the best of all is if you can get an A in an AP class)! Plus, the college credit I earned from AP exams, plus a little bit of extra hard work while I was in college, allowed me to graduate in only 3 years, saving my family roughly $25,000 in tuition, fees, room and board.

I took 3 as a junior and 6 as a senior (two of them were only a semester each), which is more than some of my friends. Junior year: APUSH, APES, AP Lang Senior year: AP Chem, AP Gov, AP French, AP Calc AB, AP Lit, AP Psych FYI you should check with schools you're interested in what AP credits they accept. I took both AP English courses and it was a waste, since at my school they counted for the same requirement! I think it's worth it, but only if you're able to do well in the classes (and thus pass the test and perhaps get credit for them, which saves yourself time & money in college). I honestly didn't have that hard of a time and was able to pass all the classes and tests, and I was on a varsity sport that took up 20+ hours a week, and worked a part time job that was only about 12 hours a week.

I'm looking at Ivy League schools, so there is really no limit to what may be too tough. If you must know, I took 1 AP freshman year, 1 AP sophomore year, 4 junior year and I will be taking 5 senior year. Total 11 APs. My friend will have a total of 15 at the end of her senior year though. She is pretty insane. Also, my school offers advanced courses that aren't official APs, but are actually harder than the APs offered. In that regard, I guess I took more like 13 or 14 APs. Still, I would say if you are looking into the most competitive colleges, push yourself to take as many advanced courses as possible. Most juniors looking at competitive schools take 0-1 freshman year, 1 sophomore year, 3 junior year and 4+ senior year. If you are willing to put the work in and get good grades, definitely push yourself.

Well it depends where you live. Some of my friends last year took a bunch of AP classes but didn't get into the college that they wanted to, instead they just applied to a junior college then transfer. It is the budget and it is so competitive now. I live in California. However, if you gurantee to get A's in all those classes and have a gpa of 3.8-4.0 then you will likely get into a university. My friends had I think was a 3.5-3.7 but didn't make it, so I don't know. I just chilled my senior year.

My junior year I took three AP classes and senior year, I took two. Colleges definitely view AP level classes as highly valued and take your passing scores into serious consideration. I even got to bypass introduction to Psychology for getting a 5 on my test senior year. Since I'm sure things have gotten more competetive since I graduated HS (2006), four is probably a good idea but only if you can handle that much and not get too stressed. Good luck!
