How much you should study for standardized tests depends on how proficient you are as a test-taker, and what colleges you're applying to. You should do some research first on the colleges you like, to get an idea of what range your score should be in. You should go to the library and check out books from different companies, just to see which fits your studying style best. I personally found the Princeton Review to be especially helpful. I consider myself a pretty good standardized test-taker, so I didn't really start studying until a few months (at most) before any standardized test. If you pay attention in school, you should know enough to do well on the test, and should perhaps concentrate more on test-taking strategies. The most challenging part of the SAT, for me, was its length. Taking practice tests is really helpful for any standardized test, and should both familiarize you with the types of questions on the test and also build up your "stamina", so that your brain doesn't become fried halfway through the test on test day. Take the PSAT both sophomore and junior year, if only for practice and to see how much you've improved. I did this, and with a bit more studying a few months before the PSAT in junior year, my score improved by 16 points and I ended up with a score above 230. I hope this helped. Good luck in high school!

The best SAT prep book out there is the official SAT study guide by the college board. It's made by the same people who make the PSAT and SAT. You don't really need to start studying immediately. Even the craziest overachievers usually wait until the beginning of sophomore year. However, it won't hurt you to start now. If you choose to, get the official SAT study guide and take a practice test just to get a feel for what the SAT is like. Then, just spend a small amount of time per day doing and going over a couple practice questions. You'll take the PSAT when you're a sophomore, but that doesn't matter. It's just a practice test to show your strong and weak areas. You'll take it again when you're a junior, and this time, the stakes are higher, because you're fighting to be in the top 1%. If you're in the top one percent, you get a National Merit Commendation which looks great on college applications. Then, you may be selected as a National Merit Semifinalist and be in the running to win tons of scholarship money-up to a fuill ride. You'll want to take the SAT in the middle of your Junior year to give you ample time to study and take it again if you don't like your score. Most people don't like their score the first time they take it.

Not to add any additional pressure to the already HIGHLY STRESSFULL teenage years, but i got to say the rule of thumb is..."Study Early...Study Often". More for the SAT than for the PSAT (which is a joke or was when i was in school). Now I got 1420 on my SAT and I'm stuck doing something I hate for very little money. My sister got 960 and owns her own company and is Happy. So don't stress to hard. Life isn't about scores. Peace, D

uh so you can pass it. i never studied cuz it made me nervous and i would get everything wrong.

what?

Start tonight you want to be fully prepared !

I'm such a lady!

1st grade, maybe kindergarden. You want to really hit the books hard about 6 months before you take the SAT and even if you like your score, take it a second time a couple months later.

The summer is the best time. I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores: http://www.guideparadise.com/index.php?option=com_guides&task=buy&id=10 I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.
