Is it unsafe to call methods from a thread?

Why do so many answers in this thread call out the asker?

  • I've noticed a lot of answers to questions in the home schooling thread call out the person who is asking. I'm not talking about the trolling questions or questions where the ...show more

  • Answer:

Usually when we do this, it's because the asker posted a question headed "What do you think about homeschooling?" and then posted a rant about how they "knew this 1 kid 1 time who didn't do his hw and stayd home all day and couldn't get a gf and didn't want to hang out at the mall i think all homeskoolers are under their parents contrl y wud a parent do somehting so crule to a kid? Their just going to be stupd and not know what they shud for life and stuff." In that case, yes. I will point out the obvious flaws in logic and how my 6th grader, even though he's not in a classroom, at least knows how to form a sentence and utilize spell check. If a student asks for the answers to an open-book exam they obviously haven't studied for, I'll inform them that no one here will help them cheat and Penn Foster will come on shortly to let them know that they're busted. If someone has really tried to find the answers and just can't, I'll explain what they're having trouble with or point them to some good source material. There's a big difference. Yes, there are some people who are just plain cocky, you'll find that in every forum...and there are people who come on when they've had a bad day, and something just punches their buttons. We're people too, we're not perfect. Edit...honestly, it also has to do with the fact that we not only get overrun with trolls in this forum, but with people who feel that it is their lot in life to explain to us, ad nauseum, why our choices for our children are wrong. It puts us on the defensive, and sometimes, that comes out in our answers. Most of the time, we really don't do this when it isn't called for, but sometimes, the straw lands wrong and the camel's back breaks. Sorry, I really don't have another answer, except that we're human too.

I totally agree. People think because this is anonymous they can say whatever they want. Yahoo Answers should have some rules about that. People ask serious questions on here and they deserve serious answers-not stupid answers from stupid people trying to get the 2 points from answering a question. People really need to grow up.

I have pointed out grammar or spelling when public school supporters claims that a home school education is inferior to a public school education. I still stand by my position that anyone making such claims needs to show that they have received that superior public school education. If you visit any section on YA you will find all of the behaviors you have pointed out. The home school section isn't isolated from the rest of Yahoo Answers. If you click on their profiles, you will see they post the same way in other sections. ETA: Sometimes it is because we are familiar with the poster and their intent. IE there was a new poster today whose question, avatar and name fit the pattern of someone who has been banned a few times for their attacks on homeschoolers. The question seemed innocent enough, but not for someone who just joined YA. I started to answer when I realized I was just playing into his game again. Sometimes you have to look beyond the surface. As for your spelling example from today..... I think it was more frustration than anything else. The poster wasn't intentionally attacking the person asking the question. They were making a point to those who answered the question with "Stay in PS. If you home school you won't get an education and will be socially inept."

People do it here, people do it in the travel sections, people do it in the parenting sections. I think everyone feels they have more freedom in an anonymous forum to say things they wouldn't say in real life.

I'll be the first to admit that I have corrected others grammar and/or spelling mistakes. I have also witnessed others doing the same thing, but there's some thing you're maybe over looking about this thread. Allot of the answers here are moms who bust their butts everyday doing everything within their ability to make sure that their kids get a top notch education. It takes a MAJOR amount of discipline and self sacrifice to do this for our children. We take heat from friends, family members and some times even strangers who don't understand it and/or just have nasty attitudes about home school and feel free to vocalize this, even though they were not asked. So I think I is a very natural and human response to point out the errors in those who are on the attack. Really, how many times can you read the same stupid question that at its core is just meant to be an insult? My attitude is, "If you're going to try and insult me and prove how superior you are, you sure as hell better know how to spell superior!"

some people like to call out grammar mistakes usually for a few reasons: 1. they're grammar nazis - they absolutely loathe any person who has imperfect grammar and will take any chance they can get in their attempt to "make the world a better place" by flaming that person with "grammar etiquette" and name-calling. 2. they have low self-esteem - people with low self-esteem tend to call out other people on their work in order to make themselves feel better. they probably can't stand themselves and need to belittle others in order to feel superior. 3. they're normal people - even normal people can't stand shitty grammar. my assumption is that the ones who do call out our grammar are the ones who are really fed up with the aforementioned errors and feel the need to express their frustration. as for dealing with this sort of folk, it's best to simply let them be.
