Is online homeschooling expensive?

Is online homeschooling more expensive than public schooling?

  • I am in high school and want to be home schooled online and was wondering if it was more expensive than public schooling.

  • Answer:

If you use the public option, it's free. There are also private online schools for which you pay a tuition. The best known free options are K12 and Conncections Academy, but there are also public online schools connected with universities. K12 or Connections Academy are referred to as public school but they are not available in all states, such as Tennessee. Public school: our taxes pay for it. Homeschool: still pay taxes for public school so technically, any penny spent for at-home-education is going to make it more expensive. That being said, I have educated my son at home for 3 years now and spend approximately $2000 per year. That cost would include: curriculum, software, reference materials, travels (a big perk with home education), don't forget groceries (no free or reduced lunches at home). Now, if there was a tax break available for home educating families.........

No, public cyber schools are paid from the same money that goes to your local public school district. I think all of the cyber schools provide materials, lap top or desk top computer, internet reimbursement, 3 in 1 printer, microphone headset, books, etc. Even though it is cyber school it is still considered public school. Do your research before choosing which one.

It's cheaper. However, especially in the US, your property taxes still go to pay for schools.

Not if you know where to get books. I have less than 60.00 in my 7th graders books and we are using all typical regular school books. I just get them from Amazon.com marketplace. I paid over 100.00 for each of my public school kids plus their lunch money, clubs, lab fees, parking passes, etc.

There are several free options for online homeschooling. Try Connections Academy, Kaplan and K12. They are free in many states.http://takecontrolofyoureducation.blogspot.com/ If you choose to homeschool independently, you can still put together a free course of study using the library and the internet (sites like MIT open courseware).http://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/ Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy it! I'm doing online school and its all free. At public school you have to pay for stuff like lunch school supplies etc. I'm sure your state has a free online school. Here in Arizona we have a site called Primavera. You should check it out. www.gothighschool.com
