How to teach homeschooling?

Homeschooling..how do you teach a subject you are weak in yourself, such as math?

  • I am wanting to start homeschooling my 5th grader but math was always a struggle for me. How then do I help and teach it to my 5th grader if I don't know the material?

  • Answer:

Higher a tutor, you can probably get a High School or College student to do it on the cheap side.

There are so many ways it can be done. Many were already covered Off the top of my head there are: Co-ops Tutors learning along side your child auditing a college course (you) dual enrollment in community college for the student once they are high school age Self guided or tutorial curriculum ...Ie Teaching Textbooks, BJ SAT etc

As previously stated by another responder, you can hire a tutor for your 5th grader. If choosing a high school or college student to fill that role doesn't sound appealing, you might consider a program such as Sylvan or Montessori. Each provide tutoring for one or more subjects. Good luck! :)

You learn with your child. There is nothing wrong with sitting with your son and puzzling out the math together. Whatever you do, don't use a classroom style textbook There are a number of homeschool math programs out there that are excellent, even if you yourself are weak in math. Take a look at http://www.mathusee.com which has the lessons on disc, and a very parent-friendly teacher's manual. Other posters will also have suggestions for you. All the best.

Part of teaching and learning is showing the process or calculation so perhaps as you teach you could learn too and there are tonnes of websites out there to help. Another tip is that even though you aren't confident - show full confidence anyway. Hope this helps!

First of all, why did you decide to homeschool your 5th grader? Ideally, you want to get the best education for your child. If homeschooling is your last and only option (for whatever reason), what you can do is try to buy the best math books available (for you and your child) or at least to get somebody else to help you (a friend or neighbor who is better at the subject). Math isn't just following formulas, so if you want to give your child the best understanding, you will need to explain math from a logical point of view. You will need to educate yourself on the subject (understand what the numbers and formulas MEAN) or he/she could end up having the same difficulties as you. A good education, I'm sure you know, involves challenges and diversity. Kids don't only learn from books, they learn from their peers and from situations that take them out of their comfort zone. I hope you can at least introduce your child to new, stimulating environments outside of your home where he/she can come into contact with lots of different people.

Homeschooling doesn't mean that you sit your kid down and give him lessons every day. For a while, you can just use workbooks. Saxon -I like my math textbook >_>- has a homeschool version with an answer key and tests; for fifth grade, that would probably be good for you. Hire a high school or college student. Use Teaching Textbooks -great for people who aren't math people- or Video Algebra -I'm not sure if that's the proper name- or one of the hundreds of curricula for people in precisely your situation. By the time he gets to high school he'll either be in community college or doing it himself.
