Answer:
It is absolutely legal, especially in Texas. I was home schooled all throughout school, including high school. You'd be surprised how many people will lie about the legality of home schooling just because they don't like it. I've heard of many, many occasions where school officials lied to parents or distorted the truth to make it harder to home school. I guess it's possible that she's mistaken, but I wouldn't be a bit a bit surprised if she was just lying.

This is 100% legal in Texas and in every other state. The problem is that school administrators are often uninformed about homeschool policies and don't know what they're talking about since home schooling is entirely separate from public school. Google "Texas Homeschool Laws" for more details. We got the same "it's illegal" nonsense when we started homeschooling, but we knew better and now I'm about to graduate and head off to Florida State University. Don't believe everything the school administrators say. They're usually wrong on this subject.

TX is actually the easiest state to homeschool in. There are not requirements or regulations what so ever. All you mother has to do is withdraw you from school and start homeschooling you. http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/laws/blTX.htm ETA: most school employees have very little knowledge of the educational laws in their state. Never ask a school employee what your legal rights are.

The 'lady' is either ignorant about the subject and just does not know what she is talking about, or she is purposefully lying because if your mother withdraws you, the school loses funding. They benefit if you stay. Homeschooling IS legal in Texas and every other state in the US, homeschooling IS legal in every province in Canada and people around the world homeschool. All your mother needs to do is withdraw you from school. She does not have to do anything beyond that in the state of Texas. After she withdraws you, she can begin a homeschool program-it can be a prepackaged one, an online one, or one you and your mother put together yourself. Check out http://www.HSLDA.org and click on Texas to see the rules for homeschooling in Texas. If you have any problems, contact that organization or just mention to whoever is giving you the problem that you are going to consult a lawyer. You will then know if they are ignorant or lying, because if it is a lie they are getting you to believe they will know it and will back down when you mention lawyers. If they are just ignorant, a lawyer will bring them up to speed on the issue so that they leave you alone.

You can find the laws for home school at http://www.hslda.org Texas is one of the easiest states to home school in. Unfortunately most people either do not know the law or they deliberately say it is illegal because they don't agree with it and there for it is wrong for everyone. Your mom can take you out of school anytime or for any reason. The lady at the school is wrong.
