Can homeschooled students get scholarships?

  • I'm currently trying to get my parents to grant me the permission to be homeschooled, but they're worried that I won't be eligible for scholarships like students in public ...show more

  • Answer:

I personally know many home schoolers who received scholarships. The daughter of a friend of mine recently returned home after four years of FREE college! She home schooled all but the first few years of elementary and she got a full ride at a private university based on her test scores alone. There are more scholarships and grants out there than you can shake a stick at and you have more time to apply because you can finish your high school course work in less time. Like another poster mentioned, you also have more time to volunteer in the community which makes you look even better.

Yes, in fact us homeschoolers are more eligible. Because we work on our own time we have more time for community service. You'll be eligible for any scholarships you would otherwise qualify for. Many homeschool graduates have gotten scholarships from programs such as National Merit Scholars.

Absolutely :) I found this article on A to Z Home's Cool Homeschooling Website. Check it out ...

YES, definitely! Just because you are homeschooled does not mean you can't get scholarships. In fact, some colleges look more highly upon students who were homeschooled because the quality of education is usually better than what you can get in public school. Homeschoolers are often better students who are more prepared for college. Colleges want students from different backgrounds... not just students who are all alike. Talk to the office of admissions at your prospective college(s), and do some searching for private scholarships in your community and on websites like FastWeb (http://www.fastweb.com).

Yes they are eligible. Your parents need to talk to your principal about it and he/she should have the info you will need.

yes they can get scholarships. Online charter schools are considered the same as public schooling. My son graduated an online charter school and now attends University of Dayton ( a private university ) with scholarships. Home schooling can work for some. The student needs to be self disciplined enough to do the work and care. Generally less work is involved with an online charter school than in a regular public school. You are also able to work at your own pace. k12 will customize your curriculum and make sure you are where you need to be. This is the school my other children are now attending, http://www2.k12.com/getk12/index.html...... Depending on where you live they may be a help, if not, there are online charter schools all over. They will provide you with the computer, printer, supplies and books that you need as well as teachers and academic advisors. This is the same as a public school but ONLINE at home.
