What do you think about a math book with only examples ?

  • I have been teaching math for about 4 years. Students in my algebra class have informed me that the textbooks do not have enough examples and lack detail. I am currently working on an ...show more

It would be interesting to look at such a reference. Bear in mind that with the homeschooling market, cost is a huge issue. Most homeschoolers have very limited budgets and select materials very carefully and I find that this is especially true for reference books. An expensive reference book is either used in a library, shared by a group of homeschoolers or done without. One thing that may make it more appealing to homeschoolers is to determine the "favorite" math curriculae out there (ex. Teaching Textbooks, Math U See, Saxon, etc.) and try to provide ties to particular volumes, chapters, etc.) That way you are providing a seamless integration with current texts in use. This speeds things along, makes a reference easier to use and much more likely to be reached for by a struggling student or parent. If you must spend all your time trying to find a particular example for a particular concept, you will soon be frustrated and believe me....when a homeschool parent pays for a book and finds it frustrating or useless....it is a shot heard 'round the world, lol !!! Good luck on your idea.

This has pretty much already been done by Teaching Textbooks, at least on their CD-roms. http://www.teachingtextbooks.com In the homeschooling market, you'd have to get market share from them. There are also many websites that have great examples. My DS has plenty of them he goes to when he's stuck.

It seems like it would be a good reference book. I could see that if I had difficulties in math, it would have helped when my kids were going through algebra, etc. Interesting point about the Chinese system. I think we can learn a lot from other cultures. :D

Sounds like a wonderful idea! It would make a very useful addition to a homeschool reference library.

It's a good idea but the book must also contain the excercises for given examples/solved questions so that the main purpose may not suffer.

That would of made is much easier in school, glad I had really good teachers that did a bunch of examples.

Seems like a decent idea, I'd buy it if you would do one for calculus.

A sample book is a good idea, but only if it is in conjunction with a book of explanations. But wait a minute, isn't that what a textbook is? IMHO, I think that a call for an 'examples book' is sort of a cop-out in which the students may feel they can quickly call up a similar problem and simply re-plug appropriate variables. A student that holds only an example book will only be as good as a person who gives you the answer to 'what', without knowing 'why'.
