How to finish high school at home?

Do home schooled children get a high school diploma when they finish high school?

  • Also do they get to talk in the public schools graduation ceremony? Thanks so much for your help!

  • Answer:

Yes, home schooled children get a diploma when they graduate. It will not be from the public school because they did not go there.* Most homeschooled students do not get a GED because you do not need a "General Educational Development Test," when you have valid transcripts. [The diploma is not *just* a piece of paper. It is worth whatever can be backed up by your transcripts.] If you homeschool through an online academy, virtual school, or through a private school, then that institution will award the diploma according to their own standards. If you homeschool as an independent family homeschool, the parents issue the diploma and that diploma is worth whatever is recorded on the high school transcripts. Graduation ceremonies vary widely. If you want a traditional cap & gown type ceremony, they are available but many homeschoolers are just as happy with a friends & family-reunion type backyard celebration. Often a graduation ceremony is part of an annual state convention and these can have hundreds of participating graduates and a big-name guest speaker. ============ *There are virtual charter schools in some areas which are public schools where the courses can be taken at home. They have their own rules. I am not talking about those.

The homeschool option the family chooses will result in how the diploma is presented to the homeschool graduate. If the family homeschools independently, with no correspondent or on-line school, the parents can purchase a diploma from a homeschool vendor. HSLDA offers a diploma complete with padded cover. They can even purchase a graduation tassel, cap and gown so they can have a formal graduation portrait taken. Really creative parents can make their own and print it out on nice parchment from Staples, etc. Family using the independent homeschool option are also responsible for keeping all their own records and creating their students' transcripts. Many use software to do this. Other create their own. Either way is acceptable. If the family used a correspondence or on-line school, or an Umbrella School, that program will confer the diploma and supply transcripts for the student. No, a homeschooler cannot participate in the public school high school graduation ceremony. However, many homeschool support groups have proms and graduation ceremonies for their students so the teens rarely miss out on anything that their public school peers. Very Few homeschoolers get a GED because of the bad connotation behind it. GED=dropout. Homeschoolers are not drop outs. It is a myth that homeschoolers have a harder time finding jobs than their public school peers. Three-quarters of all homeschool graduates go on to college. Even Ivy league schools like Harvard and Princeton are actively pursuing homeschooled students. College admissions never even look at the diploma. Instead they look at the students high school transcripts and their SAT or ACT scores. Many homeschoolers even take duel credit college coursed while still in high school graduating with up to a year of college credits before they even have their diploma. Food for thought...When was the last time anyone ever asked to SEE your high school diploma? Unless you are a doctor and it's hanging on your office wall, probably nobody since shortly after you received it. When applying for a job the application only asks, "High School Graduate?" and you check yes or no. A homeschooler who completed their high school studies can, with a good conscience, check yes.

Most homeschool families we know in our area do NOT get their GED because a GED may actually hinder you from getting into the college you want. A diploma is just a piece of paper. Universities could care less what highschool you have "graduated" from. They are looking for high SAT and ACT scores, as well as a well-rounded student who has volunteered in their community, participates in sports and clubs, and who is motivated to succeed. Because our state has a very large number of homeschooled children, there are several graduation ceremonies at the end of the school year for those who wish to participate.

Yes, homeschooled children can get a high school diploma. It will not be issued by the public school, unless you homeschooled through them. However, a diploma is merely a decoration. Much more important is the transcript and test scores such as the ACT and/or SAT. Talk in the public school's graduation ceremony? No. Very few students talk at graduation-those with highest honors only. Do you mean walk? Again, no-a homeschooled child would not walk in the public school graduation unless they were homeschooled through a public school program. Most homeschool groups have graduation ceremonies, though, and families are certainly welcome to hold their own. Our church also has a program to recognize graduates (public, private and homeschooled).

Home school kids go for their GED. Some cities, if there is a big enough population of home schooled children, will have a graduation ceremony for them, personally my town doesn't but my old school did have a home schooled child come to our school and he was moved up a year as he was too clever!
