How do I start homeschooling my son?

Question about homeschooling?

  • I want to start homeschooling my son who is autistic but I don't know where to begin. How much does it cost to start homeschooling and does anyone know of any sites that will ...show more

  • Answer:

I am homeschooling two autistic kids, please feel free to contact me offline if you want to discuss this more. We spend no money on curriculum. Basically when we started, it was purely following the IEP that we had developed in the school system, and when my children mastered that, we moved on to the next logical step. We consult with our psychologist, an OT and an ST monthly to help develop our curriculum. We use the public library and natural resources in the environment to teach all lessons. HSLDA.org does operate on a fear factor, that's how they make their money. However, the information provided on the laws are spot on, most of them directly interpreted from the state's own laws on homeschooling. Please contact your local homeschooling group, most will have a family that has special needs and will be able to directly mentor you. And email me!

Homeschooling is an excellent way to educate your child. No one understands his needs and is as dedicated to him as you are. Many schools are not prepared for special needs children and special schools may be expensive and far from home. Please ignore the ignorant and abusive comments made by people on YA who most likely have no knowledge of homeschool that is anything more than anecdotal and most likely have no experience at all as parents or with children with different needs. You are the perfect teacher for your son. The first answer gave a great website to get you started. If I were you I'd also look for local homeschool support groups. Good luck on your fresh start. Homeschooling has been a wonderful adventure for our family and I hope it will be for yours too!

You can start checking out the requirements at http://www.hslda.org/ You may also look into becoming a member, because they have the home school foundation that helps out with those families who have special needs children; you can call them for other resources, and they will point you in the right direction. Home schooling does not have to break the bank, between the use of the Internet, and the library the cost can be greatly of set. In the case of special needs however it may depend on the materials you need for the child. Joining a home school support group for special needs children will help since the parents may have found places to purchase these items, or they may be able to share them with you. Home schooling is a great way to allow your child to progress at his/her own pace, and adjust the education their needs. Do not let any opponent deter you from doing what is in the best interest of your child; as his/her parent you are more than qualified; for heavens sake who else would know, or care more about the child, and their needs than the parents. Here are some web sites that may be of use in gathering the needed information. http://www.geocities.com/athens/8259/special.html http://www.nathhan.com/forbes.htm http://www.homeschoolzone.com/add/autism.htm http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/weblinks/autism.htm http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/

First, find a group in Yahoo Groups on homeschooling kids with autism. Second, consider what his future holds or could hold--you haven't indicated where he lies on the autistic spectrum. If "finishing high school" isn't going to be a necessity, then, if he's past the age requirements, you could simply have him drop out of school and just help him in a way that will work for him. If he's fairly high functioning and a high school diploma would do him good, then definitely do it. Homeschooling doesn't cost anything, except for what you want to purchase.

HSLDA promotes OVER compliance of the laws and is not a good source of information. I would recommend going to your states dept of education site and getting the laws for your state directly from them . Then once you have a copy of your states homeschool law, call local homeschoolers (google your area and homeschooling) find out how others are complying. It doesn't cost anything to get started if you use your public library.

There is something seriously wrong with the principal and the administration at your sons school if they aren't willing to help your son. At my childrens school there is a program called "bread" it stands for bully resistence education and decision-making. I think ALL schools should have this.... Children actually get rewarded for being well mannered and nice. Maybe you could talk to the school board about having that enlisted at the school. That being said, do you have a boces in your area. Boces specializes in children with special needs and can offer you some excellent curriculum that is tailored to your son, even placement (if an alternate school is one of your options)...

Check out the WorldWide IDEA Private Academy, http://www.worldwide-idea.org/ - I know someone whose son needs some special, individualized education and she says the school allows parents to work at each student's individual learning level, and you can use whatever curriculum materials fit your child's learning styles and pace best. plus, the contact teacher she works with is great in helping her get a handle on her son's special needs.

It matters where you live. Some schooling districts have their own seperate home schooling program or if your district doesnt have that, you would have to use an online homeschooling. Good luck!
