  • Why do some Public School teachers act like homeschooling parents are their enemies? Isn't educating the common goal? I am a homeschooling parent, and I am committed to what I ...show more

  • Answer:

Of course, not all teachers are against homeschooling - many realize the state of public education and are hanging in, trying to improve things from the inside and recognize that homeschoolers are doing their own thing to improve the state of education for their own kids. I further don't believe it has to do with "money" - a teacher's salary isn't going to change because one or two (or even 10) students from their school begin homeschooling. I believe, for many teachers, the only homeschool students they see are the ones whose parents tried it and failed and had to put the kids (back) in public school. Many of these students are behind their peers and struggle to catch up and so teachers assume that ALL homeschooling is bad, not realizing that there are literally millions of children being homeschooled successfully (that they will never see). It's called prejudice (or bias, if you prefer) and we all have it. If all you ever saw of, say, Chinese people were brilliant scholars, you'd think all Chinese must be brilliant scholars (it's our brain's way of classifying the universe to make it easier to live in this complex world). Same thing - if all a public school teacher sees of homeschoolers is the ones who "failed", s/he will assume that ALL homeschoolers must be failing their kids and, hence, be against it. I also think most people (teachers and other non-homeschoolers) don't understand homeschool socialization. They don't see a trip to the store or to the doctor's office as a "social" experience, because *they* don't think of it that way. They went through the public school system and that's where they made all their friends (prejudice, again), so when they think of kids making friends, that's the only way to do it. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Not all public school teachers are against it. In fact, I've found many up here who are pro-homeschooling. But there are some who just figure that since they've taken years of university to "learn" how to teach, that we shouldn't be able to do it ourselves. We should leave it to the 'professionals'. hehe Our whole society is so used to "school" as being the only place to learn that everyone has forgotten that's not the way it used to be. I've found the teachers unions are very anti-homeschooling and it is indeed because of the money. Yes our tax $ still goes to the system but every body in a school seat gives that school $. When our kids aren't there, the school loses $. That really makes the unions mad.

I think you are venting and frustrated. I wanted to home school my two sons but didn't feel that capable. There wasn't that much support for homeschooling back then. I met a mother from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area a few years back who home schooled her 11 children. All of them turned out to be extremely successful in life and in their careers. Several became doctors, lawyers, and business executives. All had more than one college degree. One went into politics. They were so outgoing, ambitious, and contributed so much back into the community. Those kind of testamonies are so very encouraging. Try not to let it get you worked up, hon. Everyone knows you are doing the right thing, especially your children.

Im homeschooling my triplets now as well. All it boils down to is MONEY hunny. Every kid that leaves school they loose money. I am well aware of the sycophant/marxist games of our own school system.

By your lengthy post, it appears that you have more issues with public teachers than they have with you. I'm sorry your family struggles to stay afloat, but as long as your child is progressing and is happy and well adjusted, I assure you,as a public school teacher, I could care less about your home schooled child. That may sound crass, but he/she is not my responsibility and, therefore, the least of my career concerns.

It is not just on YA that you can see this type of reaction from school teachers. I get this kind of reaction in person as well. When i meet somebody new, and the person is a school teacher, as soon as the typical question comes up as to where my kids go to school, i have to brace myself for the reaction. I really dont like to be around these people, but you have to understand their point of view. Everyone wants to feel that their job is very important. These people had training to learn how to be teachers. When we homeschool, we make them feel that we can educate our own children without their fancy certification. We make them feel useless. Everyone wants to feel important. The other thing is, that school personelle- teachers, principals etc, tend to think that school is very important for children. I guess this is the same idea again. People want to feel that what they do is important, so the staff at school need to feel that school is very important for kids. When dealing with these people, instead of getting angry, try to have sympathy. Tell them that you agree that school is very important for many children, and that not all parents are cut out to educate their children. Tell them they are very needed and are doing a very important job. Then you can explain why you are homeschooling in your particular situation, or you can just say that different ways work with different people, and you are doing what is best for your children.

Besides money, teachers have convinced themselves that they are the only ones capable of educating children. They believe that no one else can make a difference in their intelligence but them. If the teachers would stop playing favorites, stop whining, stop teasing and insulting students, stop the bullying, stop theft, stop rushing children through the public school system, and could find a way to make zero tolerance possible, I may consider public schools again. However, it's not going to happen in the too near future.

They believe that only certified teachers/educators are qualified to teach students. Homeschooling takes students out of regular schools which means money out of their pockets. Public School teachers and administrators believe that theirs is the only way to go.

You don't understand the issue. The school system LOOSES public funding when you homeschool. That means TEACHER LAYOFFS are more likely! Now you understand, don't you. It's about the $$$ They don't care about education. They care about saving their own skins.

For the same reason dentists frown on do-it-yourself tooth repair. Education IS their goal. These are trained professionals. It's their job to do it better than you.
