Does anyone homeschool their children?

Do any of you homeschool your children??

  • Does anyone homeschool? Why do you do it? What method/curriculum do you use? I homeschool my two oldest children aged 8 and 10!!

  • Answer:

I was home schooled and passed my A levels (for those of you who can remember them!) at 16. I also passed grade 4 violin at 15 It can definately work. No bullying and no distractions. Parents do not need to be super-intelligent, but they do need to be motivated and willing to take advice and learn themselves.

I home school bith of my children. My son is entering first grade and my daughter is entering kindergarten. We do it through a program called ohdela. The curriculum we used last year was calvert but the school is fazing it out. I'm thinking that this year we were told we will be using Holt/Rhinehart. I do it simply because of the school system where we live. There is the option of open enrollment in the public schools but 3 out of the 5 available are on academic probation and the other 2 are very snobby schools.

Yes I do Homeschool my child, he was in public school until the fourth grade when I got so fed up with his attitude from there and their attitude towards us so I pulled him out last October. The difference is amazing he is no longer as crabby, we can teach for 15-30 mins then take a break, He has a short attention span, we go to the store for math and "real life" activities. He is fine. We go visit a friend of mine who also homeschools and he plays with her kids. I have a cousin who is a teacher and she lets me use some of the curriculum's she has in her classroom.

I homeschool my daughter who has entered 3rd grade this year. It started because she missed a lot of PS (public school) due to illness and there were some incidents with the Principal and them losing her medications. We got tired of the drama and I was constantly having to miss work. When I found out about homeschooling, I jumped with both feet and we have never looked back and I don't have to worry about her stressing over those stupid FCATs since as long as I homeschool her thru High School the only test she has to LEGALLY take is the SATs. The curriculum I use consists of McGuffey Readers, McGuffey Speller, Spencerian Handwriting, Ray's Arithmetic, Flat Traveling (for geography), some workbooks, educational software, lots of field trips, hands-on Science, Living History. I also started a Homeschool Group for PE and co-ops and field trips. Everyone homeschools for different reasons. Some only plan to do it for a couple of years, others for as long as the child(ren) are in school. Some swear by prepackaged curriculum, others prefer to use Umbrella Schools and others piece together curriculums using what feels right and works best for their needs and child and budget. Hope you have a fun school year.

My siblings and I are all home educated partly for practical reasons and partly for philosophical reasons. No-one here uses a curriculum but I recently persuaded my dad to get me copies of the course companion books for the IB (International Baccalaureate) and i use them a lot. Hannah

How odd to come to a homeschooling forum and wonder if anyone is homeschooling! Yes, we are homeschooling...both my kids have been homeschooled from the start. My daughter has graduated, my son is a year or two away. We did it because it was a legal option where we live, and we wanted an opportunity to be with our kids while they were young. As time progressed, we realized that it was working very well...we decided to keep going. We use a curriculum that is developed from the bits and pieces avialble in a myriad of areas...libraries, book stores, local district books, etc. It's a fun adventure.

Yes I homeschool my daughter who is 5 and I do it because we can and I want to. I don't use a aprticular curriculum as I make up my own from several sources. I use to teach in both private and public schools.

I home school my son. He is almost 15. This will be our 3rd year of home schooling. We are relaxed/eclectic and use free and/or cheap resources. The reason we do it is because he was not learning in school.

Yes we homeschool. We use a very eclectic assortment of books, dvd's and field trips for our homeschool. Math U See, Apologia Science, English Smart, DVD's for Canadian History, and various other things. I don't use any set "curriculum" - just what works for my different kids.
